The Challenge

Requiring a new chilled water system to be fitted on the roof, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital faced an issue getting the pipework to the roof, with only a service lift for access.

The Solution

Aliaxis produced bespoke 2.5m lengths of SuperFlo ABS pipework to enable the pipe to be easily transported up to the roof in the service lift. Contractor Metromec installed a new 800kw chiller on the roof of the building and required a reliable pipework system to work with the new unit. Metromec specified SuperFlo ABS to feed the chillers in the primary circuit, due to the product being approximately 1/6th the weight of steel, making it quick and easy to transport to the roof, offering significantly reduced installation times over metal alternatives.

Metromec liaised closely with the Aliaxis technical support team to ensure the pipework could meet the restricted access challenges, while minimising the number of trips needed to safely deliver all of the pipework to the roof. Commenting on the project, Marc Wortfrom Metromec said: “The main challenge with this project was getting the pipework to the roof, with the limited access posing further complications. SuperFlo ABS offers significant weight advantages over steel so proved much easier to get up to the roof.”
